Over the 7-9th July 2016 the very first stand alone Junior Australian Floorball Open was held on the NSW Central Coast. The tournament, hosted by Peninsula Floorball Club, included four U9 teams, six U13 teams, four U15 teams, and four U17 teams.
Fresh off their very first season of Floorball in the NSW U11 division Bondi’s U9 team took part in their first age appropriate tournament. With staggering results. The first game of the tournament saw The Green Machine take on the Taipans, not wanting to set expectations too high the coaches were cautiously optimistic of a good result. Their fears were proven to be unfounded, with Bondi coming away with a very lopsided result – winning 16-1. The kids were pumped and confident heading into their second match against a much more experienced team, Peninsula FC. The Raptors worked hard from start to finish in an epic battle where neither team managed to come away with the spoils, the result was a 4-4 draw. The final game of the round robin saw Bondi take on Woy Woy South. The game stayed close throughout the match with both teams defending resolutely. However our kids managed to head into the semi-finals on the back of a 2-1 win to finish top of the table.
By finishing first in the pool matches Bondi drew the fourth placed team for the semi-finals, the Taipans. This time around the Taipans proved slightly more competitive, with the final result of the semi 13-0 in favour of the good guys (us). And so it was that Bondi U9’s matched into the final to once again meet Peninsula FC.
The Green Machine raced out to a lead during the first period of the final. The three goal lead that the kids established early in the game proved to much for the Peninsula U9’s to overcome. In the end Bondi held on to win their first final, in their first JAFO, 5-3!
